HOGLE ZOO EMPLOYEES ON THE RISE

Doug Lund replaces former
Assistant Director Jerry Good who retired in December 2008 after 39 years at Hogle Zoo. As Assistant
Director—Administration, Lund will be responsible for supervising Finance,
Guest Services, Retail and Concessions, Marketing, IT and Security. Lund
started as a ticket-taker at Hogle Zoo in 1974, and has had a hand in nearly
every construction project for Zoo improvements. Lund has seen many changes
over the past years, especially practices of exhibiting animals in more
naturalistic habitats. “I’ve seen changes, then changes to changes, and Hogle
Zoo keeps getting better,” said Lund. “We strive to ever-improve the guest
experience here at the Zoo.” In the next year, Lund looks forward to master
planning, while continuing a successful business model for the Zoo.
Associate Veterinarian Dr.
Erika Travis is another Hogle Zoo employee with a recent significant
accomplishment. While maintaining full-time status at Hogle Zoo, Dr. Travis
became board-certified by the ACZM. The ACZM exam is a rigorous, two-day
process consisting of written and practical sections; in 2008 only six
veterinarians in the United States acquired this certification. “This was a
very academic test and it was necessary for me to study seven days a week,
memorize various journals and textbooks, and be at the top of my game on
research,” said Dr. Travis. She has worked toward this milestone for her entire
career. “Certification in zoological medicine was a personal professional goal
I sought since my internship at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago and residency at
St. Louis Zoo. Now I can draw on these credentials at Hogle Zoo by teaching
students and interns, and with greater knowledge of fieldwork.”
Currently, Lund and Dr.
Travis are working together, along with Associate Director—Animal Health Dr.
Nancy Carpenter and other Zoo staff, on the Zoo’s L.S. Skaggs Animal Health
Care Center, which broke ground in late 2008. This state-of-the-art facility
nearly doubles the amount of treatment, hospital and quarantine space at Hogle
Zoo, and is slated for completion in 2009.
