Conservation Programs Intern
The intern will be working with the Zoo’s Conservation Coordinator. The Intern should be currently enrolled (or recently graduated) in college and working towards a degree in the biology, environmental science or related fields, and should have a basic knowledge of wildlife management, fieldwork or of animal behavior. Interns need to have a recent TB test, and tetanus shot.
Because of the nature of working with researchers, management and keeper staff, the applicant needs to demonstrate maturity, self-motivation, and an ability to follow direction. An applicant for an internship must be available to work weekdays and weekends and must be able to participate in all day and several overnight field trips. All applicants must commit to a minimum of 360 hours of work over a 13 - week period, from May 16- August 15th, 2011, and must be able to work outdoors in typical Utah climate.
The Zoo does not provide housing.
The Zoo will support the intern in obatining college credit for this internship.
Duties may include:
- Enter conservation data
- Help organize supplies for conservation projects, help to monitor these projects
- Presenting conservation programs to the general public
- Conducting program evaluations
- Attend and document conservation field projects
- Help develop and organize the documentation needed to support conservation and green team programs in various departments
- Wildlife monitoring activities both on and off Zoo property
- Multiple day trips to research sites
- Daily reports/journal
- Completion of an independent research project that will require a written report and presentation
- Opportunities to take part in related events (e.g. lectures, conservation events, etc.) may arise and offer valuable experience
- Attending meetings with partner organizations
- Assisting with recycling program
- Strong interest in volunteering to advance the missions of accredited zoos and aquariums.
