FAQ

Can you tell me a little about your volunteer programs?

Information about our different types of volunteers can be found in the Volunteers section of our website.

How old do you have to be?

Applicants must already be at least 14. There is no upper age limit, but all volunteers need to be able to bend, stand, and lift up to 30 pounds.

  • Zoo Aides are 16 and up (animal care, morning shifts)
  • Docents are 14 and up (public education, variable schedule)
  • Zoo Crew Volunteers are 14 and up (office help, guest services, variable schedule)

Is there a fee?

If accepted, there is a training fee of $20.

When is training?

Spring training is held on Saturdays. Fall training is on Wednesdays.

When are applications due?

All applications for spring training must be received by end of business on March 1. All applicants will be contacted for an interview early in March. Fall applications are due September 1.

How do I apply?

Click here to apply using our earth friendly online application form.

Where do I turn in applications?

If you’ve used our earth friendly online application form, you don’t have to print it out and turn the application in. It will automatically be forwarded to our Volunteer Coordinator.

If you picked up an application form from our Guest Services department, you can mail it to:
2600 E Sunnyside Ave
Salt Lake City, UT 84108
Attn: Volunteer Coordinator
Applications MUST be received by March 1, to be considered for the spring training classes and by September 1 to be considered for the fall training classes.

Will I have hands-on contact with animals?

No. First-year volunteers do not participate in animal handling, but can apply for the animal handling class their second year. For safety, we do not have any volunteers in our elephant, venomous reptile or cat areas.

I need hours for community service.

We do not do community service. All of our volunteer work requires training and a TB test. If you would like to join our volunteer program, you can apply online or get an application from guest services.

I applied last year, and got an email from you about 2 weeks ago. Do I need to apply again?

No. If you got our email, you are still in our applicant pool. We keep all applications on file for 12 months.
