Range:

All of North America

Habitat:

Marshes, ponds, lakes and mud flats. Prefers fresh to salt water.

Characteristics:

Small with green wing patch. Male grey, rusty head, ear patch green. Female is gray-brown. Dabbling, tip up to forage on bottom of shallow ponds. Fly in graceful, tight knit formations at high speed within large flocks, in faultless formation.

Behavior:

Reproduction:

Nest is a hollow of grass lined with down and hidden in vegetation near water. 7 - 15 buff colored eggs are laid. Incubation is the responsibilty of the female only and lasts about 24 days.
