Despite its massive body, Edmontonia had a small head and very small brain. It also sported small teeth and weak jaws. Instead of chewing its food, it more than likely digested its food by fermentation, like a cow.
Massive bony plates, called osteoderms, covered Edmontonia’s back – just like a modern alligator. The spikes on its neck and shoulders were for defense. When threatened, it may have hunkered down on the ground to protect its belly until the predator gave up – like an armadillo.
