Spend the day exploring what makes primates so special through interactive discovery stations, keeper chats, themed enrichment, and crafts. You’ll learn how these intelligent, social animals navigate their world, and how you can help protect them.
Primates aren’t pets
Primates are complex animals with strong social bonds, unique personalities, and specialized care needs. Primate Palooza shines a spotlight on why primates don’t make good pets.
You’ll hear from our zoo team about what it takes to provide a healthy, enriched environment, and how legislation like the Captive Primate Safety Act aims to end the private ownership of primates.
Recycle your cellphone to protect wild habitats
In their natural environments, gorillas face increasing pressure from habitat loss, primarily due to mining materials used in cellphones and other electronic devices.
Bring your old cellphones and small electronics to recycle at Hogle Zoo’s ticket window. You’ll help reduce demand for mined minerals and support efforts to conserve forests in the Democratic Republic of Congo, key habitats for this critically endangered species. We will recycle these items through our partner Eco-Cell. Proceeds from donated devices at Hogle Zoo support our conservation partner, Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center (GRACE).
Protecting the forest, protecting orangutans
Bornean orangutan populations have declined by more than 50% in the past 60 years, primarily due to habitat loss. For more than a decade, Hogle Zoo has partnered with the Hutan-Kingabatangan Orangutan Conservation Program to restore vital rainforest habitats.
The palm oil industry is a significant contributor to deforestation in orangutan habitats. The community can download the Palm Oil Scan App to identify which products use sustainable palm oil and make orangutan friendly shopping choices.
Whether you’re swinging by with kids, friends, or on your own, Primates Palooza is a celebration with purpose, and we can’t wait to see you there.
