Utah’s Hogle Zoo is heartbroken to share the passing of male California sea lion, Kenney (4), who passed away on May 15, 2026.
On Sunday, May 10, Kenney’s care team noticed he was suddenly lethargic, had lost his appetite, and was experiencing GI issues. Within a few days, his condition became severe very quickly, and we placed him under advanced veterinary care.
Committed to improving Kenney’s condition and ensuring his continued comfort, our expert care team consulted specialists, collected diagnostic samples, and performed blood work and imaging to learn more about the cause of his acute illness and guide his treatment plan. Despite quick and rigorous medical intervention over multiple days, Kenney developed acute liver failure and passed away.
“Kenney got sick very quickly and was a tough medical challenge. Throughout the week, we used a wide range of treatments and remained in constant contact with specialists as we learned what was happening with Kenney, brainstorming next steps and treating his symptoms,” shares Dr. Erika Crook, DVM, Dipl. ACZM, Board Certified Specialist in Zoological Medicine™ and Director of Animal Health for Hogle Zoo.
Hogle Zoo conducted a full-body CT scan and necropsy to understand more and continue to work closely with health partners to advance pinniped diagnostic knowledge. At this time, the other Rocky Shores residents Maverick, Banana, Mira, and Nika are not experiencing similar symptoms but are still being monitored.
“As we grieve this loss, our teams are comforted knowing we did everything possible as we came together with dedication, skill, and unwavering commitment to give Kenney extensive care,” adds Dr. Crook.
Earlier this spring, Kenney joined Hogle Zoo from Shedd Aquarium on a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). Loved for his curious and playful personality, Kenney enjoyed interacting and playing with enrichment.
We will continue to work with the AZA to best support California sea lion populations under human care, as well as the wellbeing of Maverick and Banana.
Kenney’s passing is deeply felt by the Hogle Zoo and Shedd Aquarium teams, and we understand it’s difficult news for our community to process alongside us. Thank you for your support and understanding as we mourn.
About California sea lions
California sea lions are found along the west coast of North America. With streamlined bodies, large front flippers to propel their bodies forward, and rotatable rear flippers that function like a rudder, sea lions have unique adaptations to help them move on land and in the water. When diving, California sea lions slow their heart rates, which allows them to remain underwater for nearly 10 minutes before surfacing for air. Their long whiskers act like antennae, helping them sense the movements of fish and predators underwater.
Animal Wellbeing
Hogle Zoo is committed to providing excellent animal wellbeing through individualized health care plans, including advanced care if resident animals experience rapidly declining health.
